Reliance Properties to Restore The Janion Hotel

Developer Jon Stovell of Reliance Properties, announced the purchase and restoration of the historic Janion Hotel in Old Town Victoria. A key component of this project is the purchase of the Transport Canada lands adjacent to the hotel, which will facilitate the rehabilitation of the property.

The conference was attended by Victoria mayor Dean Fortin as well as several city councillors, prominent city heritage experts and members of the business community, and Victoria architect Paul Merrick.

The heritage building that comprises the hotel has long been in need of restoration. Dating back to 1891, it has stood empty and derelict for more than three decades. Though the project is still in the early stages, future use of the buildings will likely include commercial and residential components. Reliance will begin planning for the restoration and redevelopment of the building and related lands immediately.

The residential components may include micro-lofts. Here are examples of similar products by Reliance Properties.

“The Janion Hotel is one of the most significant and treasured heritage buildings in Victoria, and our goal is to restore it and preserve its history while adapting it to a new use,” says Jon Stovell, president of Reliance Properties. “Its evolution and uses over time have matched the life of this neighbourhood and the city itself, and we understand how important it is to the community. We are excited to be a part of the Janion’s continuing legacy.”

Victoria architect Paul Merrick, founder of Merrick Architecture, has been hired for this project. A development permit application will be submitted later this year.

Reliance has established a track record of restoring heritage buildings in Vancouver’s downtown and Gastown neigbourhoods. Last year the company renovated the Burns Block building in Vancouver – a project that included Vancouver’s smallest rental suites. Reliance’s proposed restoration of the Northern Junk buildings in Old Town Victoria will further the revitalization of the area.

Reliance Properties Ltd. is a privately-owned Vancouver company that has been active in the acquisition, redevelopment, leasing and management of a wide variety of commercial and residential real estate for over 50 years. The firm has earned awards for its restoration of heritage buildings and focuses on developing long-term tenant relationships.
